Air New Zealand has been named the world’s safest airline heading into 2022.

The carrier was awarded the top honour due to its young fleet; its COVID protocols; and because its pilots fly well in challenging conditions.

A 2018 incident in Perth caused Qantas to sink to seventh place in the rankings, after topping the list consistently since 2014.

Virgin Airlines ranked tenth on the list.

AirlineRatings.com Editor-In-Chief, Geoffrey Thomas says, Australian and Kiwi airlines often excel due to their ‘cockpit culture’.

“In the cockpit, everyone is kind of equal,” said Mr Thomas, “whereas in many countries of the world, if the Captain says ‘black is white’, well, then black is white, and the co-pilots will not question the Captain… and that’s led to some terrible accidents over the years”.

The airlines are ranked by criteria including: its crash record, audits, fleet age, overall balance sheet strength, and any past incidents.
