Serena Williams is through to her 40th Grand Slam semi-final, defeating second seed Simona Halep in the quarters of the Australian Open.

The pair hadn’t met since the Wimbledon 2019 Final where Halep denied Williams of clinching her 24th Major title.

Tuesday night’s Australian Open showdown against Halep was Williams’ 55th quarter-final at a Grand Slam.

Serena asserted her dominance in an almost flawless first set claiming it 6-3.

Unforced errors began flowing in the second set for Williams with Halep able to break Serena’s serve early.

But Williams made an impressive comeback eventually overpowering Halep to win in straight sets 6-3 6-3.

At her post-match interview Williams said she’s peaking at exactly the right time.

“I definitely think this is the best match I’ve played this tournament for sure, and obviously I had to going up against number two in the world, so I knew that I had to do better, and that’s what I did and so I’m excited,” said Williams.

Williams will face Naomi Osaka in the semi-final.
