The NBL has approved a license for a Tasmanian team to enter the competition from the 2021-22 season.
Tasmanian Premier Peter Gutwein says it gives locals a true pathway to basketball.
“This is huge news for the state; we haven’t had a team in the NBL for 25 years,” says Mr Gutwein.
“The agreement includes both a new team [and] obviously significant investment that we’ll be making in terms of the Derwent Entertainment Centre.”
The new team will be the 10th in the league.
