The Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games have been postponed until next year because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe formally asked for the delay to the middle of 2021.
The event, due to begin in four months, will now begin in July next year, but will still be known as Tokyo 2020.
It’s the first time in history the start of an Olympics will be delayed to another year.
The decision comes after Australia, Canada and Britain said they wouldn’t be sending athletes this year.
Australian Olympic Chef de Mission Ian Chesterman has told 2GB, our athletes can now reset their planning.
“Delaying it for 12 months, it gives the athletes certainty; they’ve been living under a cloud, just not knowing what’s been going on for quite some time,” he says.
