British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has announced lockdown measures in response to the coronavirus pandemic.
Boris Johnson has cited the disease as a “real threat” to the country, and he says the government is taking exceptional measures to tackle the spread.
All cafes, restaurants, bars and gyms in London have been ordered to close their doors from Friday night, in an effort to strengthen social distancing.
Boris Johnson says the move will limit social contact and slow the spread of the virus.
“Unless we get this right, we are going to see thousands of lives lost needlessly, but we have an opportunity to get on top of it, and to do that, we’ve got to follow the advice we’re getting, and that’s why we’re taking the measures that we are today, it’s absolutely vital that people do avoid unnecessary social contact”, said the Prime Minister.
Licensing laws will allow the government to order businesses to close.
The government says it will also pay 80% of wages to any workers who have lost their jobs due to business closures.
