There will be a reduction in the number of Australians able to return home, as hotel quarantine places are cut.

National Cabinet has agreed on changes to prevent the new highly contagious UK strain of COVID-19 from gaining a stronghold in the country.

All returning passengers will also now be required to get a negative test before boarding their plane.

Speaking after Friday’s National Cabinet Meeting, the Prime Minister said they also want to relieve pressure on borders until there’s a better understanding of this new strain.

“We will be reducing till the 15th of February, the caps on international arrivals in New South Wales, Western Australia, in Queensland by 50%”, said Mr Morrison.

Travellers will also be required to wear a mask while in airports and on aeroplanes.

The Prime Minister says the situation in Brisbane is “serious”, considering a positive case recorded yesterday is confirmed to be the more infectious strain from the UK.

Scott Morrison said the three day lockdown for the Greater Brisbane area announced on Friday morning, will give contact tracers a head start to contain the outbreak.
