On this episode of Techwise, Brad Huddleston tackles a big worry for parents: getting their kids to listen when it comes to technology use. Many parents find it tough to guide their children about how they use their devices.
Brad starts with two important apologies that parents need to make to their tech-loving kids. First, parents should admit to their own use of technology. They need to recognise that they may not be good role models when it comes to screen time. ‘I encourage parents to admit they are just as addicted to technology as their children,’ says Brad.
Studies show that the average age of gamers is 35, which means many parents are also spending a lot of time on their devices, just like their children. This can make it harder for kids to take parents seriously when they talk about technology use. ‘But I would also remind parents that they are parents, not friends to their children,’ says Brad.

Brad also suggests that parents apologise for buying the gadgets that have taken over family life. By owning up to this, parents can show they are part of the problem, which is a good first step in tackling the issue. After this, he recommends that families should try a digital detox.
This means everyone takes a break from their devices, which can help improve relationships with each other and make technology use healthier. ‘God commands parents in Proverbs 22:6,’ says Brad, ‘to train up a child in the way he should go. And when he is old, he will not depart from it.’
Brad believes that parents should guide their children well so they stick to good habits as they grow older. They need to feel empowered to set rules but also set a good example when it comes to using technology.
