On this episode of 20Twenty, Jenny Yarnell and Connie Dexter joined us to discuss an exciting community project in Western Australia. The initiative focusses on reviving traditional Christian values during the Christmas season through Christmas Story Time events at local libraries. The goal is to remind young children of the true meaning of Christmas; the birth of Jesus Christ.
Christmas Story Time aims to provide a positive alternative by sharing stories that reflect the Christian origins of Christmas. This then helps kids understand why it is so important. ‘It gives people the opportunity to be exposed to the truths of the Gospel and to Jesus being the reason for the season,’ says Jenny.
At these storytime events, children listen to engaging storybooks that share the Christmas message. During these sessions, readers make the stories exciting and fun. Connie describes a lively format where stories are read aloud, followed by fun activities for children aged 2 to 5, including some options for their older siblings.
‘We felt it was necessary to include crafts and activities,’ says Connie. ‘It’s lots of fun to engage the children in activities that actually relate to what they’ve heard. Then they can take them home and it keeps reminding them of the stories.’
The true meaning of Christmas
Getting approval from libraries was a key step for this project. Jenny and Connie worked carefully to get the necessary permissions. By teaming up with the Australian Christian Lobby, who has experience with family-friendly storytime events, they learned how to book library spaces without disrupting current programs.
As the project expands, Jenny and Connie plan to take it all over Australia. With support from the Australian Christian Lobby and the Australian Association of Religious Education, they’re offering resources and training. Children can learn about the true meaning of Christmas, and other communities across Australia can easily get involved and celebrate the season with a focus on Jesus.
‘People are already doing this in their churches or at Sunday school,’ says Jenny. ‘They tell stories and have activities. So in some respects, it’s not that much different. But it’s in the public space.’
Storytime events not only make Christmas more meaningful for children but could also count towards professional development for teachers. The initiative supports both the true meaning of Christmas, and the professional growth of those involved, creating a positive community impact.
‘It’s an exciting time for us,’ says Jenny.
