As followers of Jesus, how can we go from fear to faith in the midst of the constant changes, challenges and chaos that define our world today? Under these circumstances, how can we continue to look to a brighter future?
In his 9th annual Understanding The Times Tour, Dr Kameel Majdali addresses these issues and more, sharing his belief that it’s God’s will for us to be situationally aware. As Christians, we need to know how to respond to some of the big cultural and social shifts that are occurring around us.
Credible Information
A growing concern among Christians today is discerning truth from misinformation or conspiracy theories. How can we identify trustworthy news sources? Kameel suggests one approach is to seek out sources that align with our own worldview.
‘There are still true journalists out there,’ says Kameel, ‘and there is also what we call the rise of the citizen journalist. These are everyday people who are eyewitnesses to what’s happening. They have a smartphone or a recording device and they are reporting to inform people, not to brainwash as is often happening in mainstream sources.’
Spiritual Discernment
According to Kameel, research is essential to find a news source that we resonate with. However, he emphasises the importance of maintaining discernment, because even reputable outlets can get it wrong. He also says that one credible source will tend to guide you towards others.
‘There’s a wonderful verse in 1 Thessalonians 5:21,’ says Kameel. ‘It says: prove all things. Hold fast to that which is good. This is not cynical, it’s not skeptical, it’s just spiritually mature discernment. That discernment should be operative at all times, not just on special occasions. To me, that’s the attitude we should have. ‘
Obeying The Government
Where do we as Christians stand when we are called to obey the mandates of government, but their actions seem deceitful to us? Where do we turn for accurate information in following the law of the land, particularly when mainstream media exhibits bias?
‘My understanding has always been that we obey the law of the land,’ says Kameel. ‘But there can come a time when the government will ask you to do something that will violate your faith. And that is starting to happen more and more. In that case, you have to pray and make a decision.’
The Courage Of Our Convictions
If what we’re being told is going to violate our conscience, then we will need the courage of our convictions to stand up and do something. When we can’t personally solve a problem, we can find someone who is sufficiently empowered, like a parliamentarian, and see if they can help.
‘It takes courage to stand up against the crowd and against the tide,’ says Kameel, ‘but I tell you, God honours courage. If we’re not strong and courageous, then we haven’t done sufficient business with Him because He will give all the courage, all the boldness and all the strength we need.’
‘We all can be cowardly, but it’s not the end of the world. What’s the end of the world is when we refuse God’s strength and courage and want to remain cowardly. Then there’s a problem.’
