On this episode of 20Twenty, Alex Cook from Wealth With Purpose joined us to discuss the economic challenges Australians are facing and how faith can guide wise money management. He highlights the cost of living crisis impacting families and businesses, leading to the lowest living standards in fifty years.
Alex points out that both government actions and global initiatives, like the push for a ‘one world government,’ are making things worse by driving up prices and debt, which could harm Western capitalism.
‘The building blocks are being put in place,’ says Alex. ‘And that’s what’s fascinating to me. When you look at it from the book of Revelation, it says in the end times no one will be able to trade without the mark of the beast. I think we’re now at a time in history where technology actually makes that possible.’
Alex believes that current public policies keep prices high instead of lowering them. Many Western countries share policies that reduce economic freedom and give more power to the government over our personal finances. This could lead to a future where cash is replaced by digital money controlled by central banks, allowing governments to monitor and manage how people spend their money.
‘The levels of debt in the Western world today are unprecedented really,’ says Alex. ‘So the system is quite frail in and of itself. So there are good reasons to prepare. But we can’t lose sight of the fact that we’ve got to trust in God. And we’ve still got a call on our lives to fulfil the Great Commission.’
Balancing Financial Wisdom with Generosity
Alex urges believers to confront the reality of debt and prepare for tough times, but warns against withdrawing in fear. He stresses the importance of balancing financial wisdom with generosity, as we are taught in the Bible. Alex recommends using his 10-10-80 budgeting rule: giving 10% to God, saving 10%, and living on the remaining 80%.
‘Financial health is what happens when you align your finances with God’s word,’ says Alex. ‘And that means becoming a good steward. Making sure you don’t have excessive debt, learning to save and learning to give. It’s those basic Biblical principles that help you to become financially healthy.’
Alex also believes it’s important for Christians to be involved in their communities, using their resources to help spread God’s message while being ready for any future challenges. But finding the balance between being spiritually prepared and practically ready is key, without becoming fearful.
‘Whether you take the Old Testament view or the New Testament view,’ says Alex, ‘we are called to put God first with our lives. And that includes with our money.’
