On this episode of Faith Boost, Pastor Andrew McLennan talks about how to call upon the name of the Lord when everything seems to go wrong. Especially during times of grief and loss. Andrew starts off by sharing the story of Adam and Eve. They were made in God’s image and lived in a perfect paradise until they disobeyed Him.
This led to many struggles, and eventually Adam and Eve were sent away from the Garden of Eden. This moment changed everything, bringing hardship and sadness into their lives. ‘Life takes on a really new slant for Adam and Eve,’ says Andrew. ‘Everything’s changed. Everything’s hard. The Bible says even the ground became hard. It was hard to produce fruit and vegetables. Adam had to work extra hard.’
But then things take a heartbreaking turn when their son Cain tragically kills his brother Abel. The depth of sorrow Adam and Eve must have experienced is unimaginable. It’s a pain no parent should ever endure. Yet, despite their profound loss and the temptation to despair, they held onto God’s instruction to be fruitful and multiply (Genesis 1:28).
This command became their guiding light and a source of hope amidst the darkness. ‘I’m sure Adam and Eve longed for the old days,’ says Andrew. ‘But you know what they did instead? They went back to what God had said to them in the beginning.’
Call Upon the Name of the Lord
In the wake of their losses, Adam and Eve chose to focus on obeying God. They took intentional steps to fulfill His command, which led to the birth of their son Seth. Andrew beleives this was a pivotal new beginning. Through Seth’s lineage, people began to call upon the name of the Lord once more. This act of faith not only marked a turning point for Adam and Eve but also sparked a spiritual renewal for many.
‘A move in God happened in the midst of that darkness,’ says Andrew. ‘It happened in the midst of the sadness and the tragedy of their grief and loss. They went back to the Word of God and they saw God move again. It didn’t take away the pain of their loss. But sometimes you’ve just go to realise, I’ve only got a certain amount of time to do something for God.’
Andrew connects this to our lives today, encouraging us to keep going after facing loss, just like Adam and Eve did. He reminds us to focus on what God has called us to do, even when things are hard. Andrew encourages us to trust God’s promises and keep moving forward, no matter how tough life gets.
‘We’ve got to stand up again,’ says Andrew. ‘We’ve got to say, what did God call me to do? Adam and Eve did that and the world got better. Men began to call on the Lord again.’
‘We can all pick ourselves up. And we all can go again.’
