We can waste a lot of time being angry, usually because of stress. Have you ever learned how to deal with anger in the right way? Maybe you’re upset with God about something in your life and you blame Him for it. Or maybe the people around you annoy you, or you’re angry at yourself and can’t get over it.
We all deal with anger from time to time, and though feeling angry isn’t a sin, it’s important to recognise where it’s coming from and get to the root of the problem before it takes over. With God’s help, you can experience a breakthrough in this area of your life.
On this episode of Enjoying Everyday Life, Joyce Meyer teaches us that with God’s help, we can understand and examine the reasons for our anger, and learn how to express it in healthy ways.
Dealing with anger in the right way
Many people are trying to manage their relationships, even their relationship with God. You can dress nicely, go to church, and look happy, but that doesn’t show what’s really going on inside you. If you’re angry, you might not even know that’s what’s bothering you.
‘There are a lot of people who suffer from all kinds of different problems,’ says Joyce. ‘And really the root of the problem is that somewhere deep inside, they’re angry at God because their life hasn’t turned out right.’
Even when we make good excuses, if we know we should do something and don’t, we’ll feel guilty for not doing it. Benjamin Franklin said that things started in anger end in shame. He also said that anger always has a reason, but it’s rarely a good one.
‘Anger is one letter away from danger,’ says Joyce. ‘All you have to do is add a D, which we could say represents the devil. And anger becomes danger. Anger is the condition where the tongue works faster than the mind.’
Sharing our feelings with God
When we read the Psalms, we see that David openly shared his feelings with God. He was very honest about his anger, pain, confusion, and even times when he felt abandoned by God or didn’t understand what was happening. He didn’t hide his emotions; instead, he expressed them to the right person.
‘If we would really talk things out with God,’ says Joyce, ‘we would get rid of them and they wouldn’t be a problem for the rest of our lives. And the good thing about going to God is He’ll give you the help that you need to actually pull it off and do it.’
Joyce believes that a big reason people are angry today is because of the stress they’re under. But if you don’t like your life or your schedule, you created it. And you’re the only one who can change it.
‘God wants to help us manage our anger in a way that honors Him.’
