About

Mathematics and faith may seem like two very different concepts, but they are more intertwined than we might think. In fact, mathematical principles have been used to help us understand the complexity of God for centuries.

Faith in God and mathematics share a number of similarities, including the importance of logic, reason, and order. It may come as a surprise to some, but many of the best thinkers in history have said mathematics is proof of the existence of an all-knowing God.

Dr Sam Hey was a maths and science teacher before moving on to church pastoring and tertiary education in Bible history and sociology. He’s currently lecturing at Alphacrucis College, preparing students to teach many subjects in Christian schools, including maths.

A Passion For Maths

Sam teaches critical thinking for effective learning, and he recently joined us on 20Twenty to explore the relationship between faith in God and mathematics.

‘I have a passion for maths as something that’s creative that you can enjoy,’ says Sam.

Sam believes there’s no such thing as pure chance. There is so much order in the world, and many Christian scientists have been inspired to explore the meaning behind it. In fact, most agree that it is impossible to do maths without the context of Christianity.

‘It’s amazing that whichever country you go to in the world,’ says Sam, ‘two plus two equals four. Isaac Newton was fascinated by this, and he was fascinated by the Bible and God. This led him to the laws of motion and the laws of gravity because these laws are constant wherever we go. This fascinates philosophers and mathematicians who are Christians, because they are amazed by the sense of order.’

God Makes Life Worth Living

Einstein once said, God does not play dice. It was his religious worldview and his background in Judaism that gave him this sense of confidence in the order of the universe. That then gave him the equations that are still being proven correct today, and underlying the structure of the universe.

But in the 1880s , Sam says there was a secularisation that began to take place, leaving God out of the discussion about maths. ‘The great problem with this reductionism is that you reduce everything down to just atoms, electrons and neutrons. You don’t have the life left in it at all.’

‘We as Christians are bringing holistic understanding of the complexity of the world,’ says Sam. ‘As opposed to the reductionists and humanists who were taking away all that makes life worth living.’

Sam believes we need to give the children freedom to explore the possibilities of maths. It’s important that when they get the answers wrong, they are still encouraged. It’s about so much more than just crunching numbers.

Life Needs Relationality

‘Like the prodigal son, there’s an encouragement to repent and turn home,’ says Sam. ‘So often everything we do in life needs relationality, forgiveness, love and support.’

‘This only comes from the Christian message.’
