On this episode of 20Twenty, Andrew McColl from Family Voice Australia shared his thoughts on self-government based on the Bible. He mentioned a part of the Bible, Galatians 5:22-23, which says that self-control is a sign of the Holy Spirit’s work in us and is very important for being honest and responsible. This kind of self-governance is key for building strong families and communities because when people want to serve God, they help make society better.
Andrew shared some examples from the Bible, like Boaz helping Ruth, Mordecai watching over Esther, and Nehemiah rebuilding Jerusalem. He showed that self-control helps us take positive actions that support others. He pointed out that self-control isn’t just about avoiding bad behaviour; it’s also about actively doing good things and caring for our communities.
‘Self-government or self-control is the first and most important form of government,’ says Andrew. ‘It includes taking constructive and productive steps for good, for ourselves, for our family, our church, and for our community. It clearly means acting vigorously and decisively when required to protect and preserve others in a way that honours God.’
Faith Can Lead to Positive Changes
Andrew also discussed the balance between personal responsibility and government help. He encourages people and families to take charge in their communities instead of just depending on the government, suggesting that real change starts with local efforts. He highlighted that the Bible encourages Christians to do good and help those in need, which shows how faith can lead to positive changes.
‘The challenge is right at our doorstep,’ says Andrew. ‘To begin to act responsibly and Biblically in a God honouring way for the sake of those needy people in our community. It starts at home and in the family self-governance.’
Andrew believes that true empowerment comes from taking responsibility for ourselves. He urges us to start making a difference where we live, by practicing self-governance every day. He reminds us as Christians to be active in helping our communities through self-control and faith in God’s promises.
