Responsible Social Media Use in Churches

by | Apr 2, 2025

The real danger of social media is it can distract us from God. This is an important part of living wisely in today’s digital world.

On this episode of Techwise, Brad Huddleston dives into how technology, particularly social media, can impact the Church. Known for his warnings about the dangers of technology, Brad often receives questions about his views on living wisely in today’s digital world. His primary concern is around the issues of sin and addiction.

‘The guideline for all matters in my life is the Bible,’ says Brad. ‘I look to God’s Word regarding what I can and cannot do.’

Brad bases much of his insight on 1 Corinthians 6:12, which reminds us that while many things are permissible, not everything is beneficial. He emphasises the importance of not being mastered by anything. While Brad doesn’t oppose churches using social media, he remains cautious about the addictive nature of secular platforms.

Living wisely in today’s digital world

Brad points out that people don’t get addicted to a church’s social media; instead, the real problem is that many Christians are hooked on regular social media sites. This concern is based on Biblical teachings about what we let into our lives. In Matthew 6:22-23, Jesus explains that our eyes act like a lamp for our bodies.

‘If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light,’ says Brad. ‘But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness? We all need to remember this the next time our eyes are wandering around on social media.’

Brad doesn’t believe that using social media moderately is wrong; the real danger is when it takes over our lives and distracts us from God. This is an important part of living wisely in today’s digital world. Brad urges everyone to reflect on their online activities and to seek out uplifting and inspiring content instead of things that lead them away from light and truth.

‘What I am against is what God is against,’ says Brad. ‘And that’s sin and addiction.’

Designed for those seeking a deeper understanding of the impact technology has on our lives, Techwise is available anytime on Vision’s website and app. Listen to Brad’s full message below, and don’t forget to join us for the next episode of Techwise
