Aiden Grant is the host of a new podcast called Songs That Changed You, a faith-based program that has already received great feedback from non-Christian listeners. They have been deeply moved by the content they have heard so far, and are tuning in for more.
Aiden’s podcast beautifully combines his two great loves; music and God. He invites guests to talk about their favourite song, and how it transformed their life and brought them closer to God.
On this episode, Aiden was joined by Pastor David Hall, Australian Christian Churches State President for South Australia. Together they discussed how the song, Ancient of Days continues to have a profound impact on David’s life and spiritual journey, even today.
David believes that American worship leader Ron Kenoly helped make the song famous, because his praise and worship brought together African-American gospel music with contemporary music. ‘I think that changed the face of worship globally,’ says David.
For David, Ancient of Days gave him an appreciation and passion for praise and worship. ‘It’s a song that I look back on that put a real hunger in my heart for the things of God,’ he says.
David had a profound encounter with God at about the age of 15 at a youth camp. ‘I do feel like while I loved God, and while I was already a Christian, that was the moment I felt like God’s empowering presence came upon my life,’ says David. ‘There was a sense of calling and destiny to serve God. But I think worship was a hugely key thing to capture my heart.’
But it was Ron Kenoly’s style of worship that impacted David the most. ‘He just burst onto the scene and was singing songs that were so full of life. He was mixing that Southern praise and worship Gospel sound with contemporary music. And we started seeing this in church. It changed praise and worship.’
David says that according to the Bible, music was never actually created for entertainment. Its first purpose historically was worship. What we listen to has a massive impact on our spiritual life, but that’s not to say we shouldn’t enjoy listening to music.
‘But I do think you can fill your house and you can fill your car with the presence of God,’ says David. ‘You’re singing songs that declare the truth of the gospel and the goodness of God. I believe that’s a game changer.’
‘I do think when we worship God, that is one way we cast our cares on Him. ‘
