Mother’s Day is a time to celebrate and honour the women who have shaped our lives. Whether it’s their words of encouragement, unconditional love, or countless sacrifices, mothers play a vital role in shaping families. But one of the most powerful things a mother can do, is pray.
Mothers Play a Vital Role
The Bible is full of stories of mothers who prayed for their children. One of the most well-known is Hannah, the mother of Samuel. She longed for a child and, in deep anguish, poured out her heart to God. In 1 Samuel 1:27, she says, I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of Him. Hannah’s faith resulted in the birth of Samuel, who grew up to be a great prophet, leading a nation back to God.
A praying mother leaves a legacy. She may not always see the results straight away, but God is always working. If you’re a mother, grandmother, auntie, or a spiritual mother to someone, your prayers are powerful. You might be praying for a child who has lost their way, or a struggling family member or friend. Just keep praying. God hears every word.
When Mother’s Day Feels Hard
For some of us, Mother’s Day is a beautiful celebration. But for others, it’s a painful reminder of loss, broken relationships, and unanswered prayers. If you are estranged from your mother or grieving the absence of a mother figure, God has not forgotten you.
Psalm 34:18 tells us, The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. God sees your pain, and He cares. If your relationship with your mother is strained, bring it before Him. Healing takes time, but nothing is beyond God’s restoration.
And if you’re a mother feeling guilt or regret, just remember, God’s grace is bigger than your mistakes. He can redeem any relationship and restore what is broken.
A Mother’s Legacy of Faith
Motherhood is not about perfection. It’s about faithfulness. Whether it’s the daily ritual of saying bedtime prayers with your child, or finding quiet moments with God; by living out her faith for others to see, a mother plants seeds that last for generations.
My grandmother prayed for me her whole life, and I like to think she’s up there in heaven now, watching over us and smiling as she sees her legacy continue through our family. I am a living, breathing answer to prayer.
So, this Mother’s Day, let’s appreciate the women who have prayed for us, loved us, and pointed us towards Jesus. And for those who are struggling, there is comfort in knowing that God is a perfect, loving Father who holds you close.
