When I was fifteen years old, I started to ‘look for God.’ And I found Him on the family bookshelf. For there was a much neglected Bible from the Gideons, with a layer of dust on top of it. I don’t know who brought it into the home or why since my family was not religious and did not go to a house of worship, not even for Christmas and Easter. It had been on the bookshelf for years. I took this Bible off the bookshelf, dusted it off, and began to read it. It was the King James Version, but I did not mind since I was studying Shakespeare at school anyway.
I began to read the Bible regularly because it was ‘bread’, and I was the hungry man who found it. Psalm 19:7 states that the Law of the Lord (a synonym for the Word of God) is perfect, converting the soul. Faith comes by hearing, and hearing comes from the Word of God (Romans 10:17). The regular reading of God’s Word stimulated saving faith in my life: I repented of my sins, believed the gospel (1 Corinthians 15:1-5), and confessed Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord. I was born again and could see the things of the Kingdom of God (John 3:3). Now, the Word of God became my passion because the more I read it, the more I connected to God by faith.
Passion Became Promotion
My passion became my promotion. The next benefit from Bible reading was my academic success. Psalm 19:7 has a second clause: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making the simple people wise. Before I started reading the Bible, I was a slow reader and earned average marks. Once I began reading the Bible, within weeks, my academic performance increased exponentially. I was honoured with the title of Top Ten graduating scholar out of a class of 450 students. I also won a university scholarship.
Shortly after arriving at the university, I took an advanced placement exam. Apparently, I did so well that the university awarded me one year’s worth of credit. In other words, I skipped one year of university and graduated early. Eventually, I went on to complete a Master’s and PhD (at Melbourne University). I give all glory to God because of His Word. Psalm 19:7 – both clauses – summarise my testimony. God’s Word can bring you to salvation and make you wise.
Then, my promotion became my profession: God called me to full-time ministry as an international Bible teacher, which I have done for over forty years, including many years as a Bible College principal. That’s why our ministry is called Teach All Nations.
SoulFood Bible Reading Program
I have read the Bible from cover to cover almost thirty times. Yet, I wanted an annual reading schedule that was systematic. In 2009, I was introduced to the SoulFood Bible reading program, designed to help you read through the entire Bible in one year. I was immediately ‘hooked’ and have been using Soulfood ever since. Rarely do I miss a day.
I heartily recommend SoulFood to anyone serious about knowing God through His Word. Except for Sundays, you will get the same balanced diet: a daily dose of Psalms, a daily dose of Proverbs, a daily dose from one of the four gospels, and a more extensive daily dose from the Bible itself. As for Sundays, the readings are shorter, and this gives you a chance to catch up where you have fallen behind.
Full credit to the designers of SoulFood, as well as Vision Christian Media, for making it available to Australia. Your mutual efforts have paid off, and many have been blessed by your exceptional efforts.
To the Vision supporters, why not subscribe (for free) to the quarterly devotional The Word for Today, which includes SoulFood? Get started with the best ‘read through the Bible in one-year’ program available. After all, we do not live by food alone but by every word that comes from the mouth of God (Matthew 4:4).
