On this episode of Techwise, Brad Huddleston discusses the use of technology in Australian schools. Australia adopted the use of technology in classrooms early on. The first laptop program started in Melbourne at the Methodist Ladies College in 1989. However, by 2016, people began to worry about how effective this approach really was. In some instances, this has even sparked a return to traditional methods of learning.
‘Tech in schools is a waste of money,’ says Brad. ‘And Australia has always been on the leading edge of attempting to integrate technology into the classroom.’
John Vallance, the head of Sydney Grammar School, strongly criticised the heavy spending on computers in classrooms. He described this investment as a ‘scandalous waste’ of funds. Vallance believes that the money spent on tech tools like interactive whiteboards and digital projectors have not led to better learning outcomes for students.
Many schools have limited budgets, so it’s concerning when technology is given priority over other important needs. Vallance highlights a common concern among teachers about the high cost of digital tools and their limited benefits. For instance, even though schools spend millions on technology, many of these tools often go unused and are seen as ineffective.
Return to Traditional Methods of Learning
Sydney Grammar has taken steps away from using laptops altogether, even for older students. Students must write their assignments and essays by hand until Year Ten. This return to traditional methods of learning encourages parents to think more carefully about what types of technology are truly helpful in classrooms.
Brad encourages parents to ask schools tough questions about how they use technology and their teaching methods, and they might be surprised by the answers. While technology is meant to improve learning, it often doesn’t. This raises important questions about whether these investments are really worth it.
‘If you’re a smart parent,’ says Brad, ‘you’re asking lots of questions of your child’s school. But the answers may shock you.’
