On this episode of Faith Boost, Pastor Andrew McLennan explains that our toughest challenges can sometimes lead to our biggest victories. He shares the story of Samson from the Book of Judges, where Samson unexpectedly encounters a lion. As Christians, we can also face these types of battles when we decide to follow Jesus.
Andrew says that, like Samson, Christians don’t go looking for trouble. Instead, they need to be aware of the spiritual battles happening around them. He compares the devil to a thief who tries to break our connection with God and mess up our lives. Being a true Christian means recognising these challenges and facing them directly.
‘We can pretend this isn’t real,’ says Andrew. ‘And we can pretend we don’t have a problem with the devil. But the reality is the Bible says there is a war going on right now. Jesus said it like this. Heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force. And if you are going to be a Christian your whole life, make no mistake, you’re going to have to face the devil.’
When Samson was filled with God’s Spirit, he was strong enough to defeat the lion. Later, when he went back to the lion’s body, he found honey inside. This honey represents the unexpected good things that can come from our struggles. ‘What could have been a defeat, became something sweet,’ says Andrew.
Our toughest challenges can lead to our biggest victories
Some people question why Samson touched the dead lion’s body. But it’s important to know that the Nazirite vow treats human bodies and animal remains differently. ‘Samson’s life was unusual,’ says Andrew. ‘And God orchestrated all these events so that honey could come out of that lion.’
When we have strong faith, our challenges can become victories. The Bible tells us in James 4:7 that if we stand against the devil, he will flee. Our successes can lift us up and inspire others. Just like Samson shared the honey with his parents, we are meant to share our blessings with those around us.
Andrew encourages everyone to face their challenges with trust in God. ‘The sweetness of your victory can feed other people, and encourage other people as well. Let the Lord use you to defeat that lion in your life, and God will bless others through your victory. And that will be so, so sweet.’
