About
If we keep treating our work better than we treat ourselves, there’s a good chance we won’t be around to finish it. To have the greatest impact when we do work, we must learn to take ‘time out’. Why do the mighty fall? Because they don’t understand the importance of rest! In the book of Genesis we read: ‘…God ended His work…and He rested…’ (Genesis 2:2 NKJV) God rested, so why don’t we? There are two reasons: first, we strive for goals that God never gave us. Jesus said, ‘My yoke is easy and My burden is light.’ (Matthew 11:30 NKJV) When something is constantly too hard or too heavy, we need to ask, ‘Did God really call me to do this?’ The will of God will stretch our faith to new limits and our talent to new levels, but it won’t destroy our health, peace of mind or family. Second, we lose perspective. Our priorities get out of line. We say, ‘I’m doing this for my family.’ But has it occurred to you that-given the choice-your family would rather have more of you and less of other things? We don’t give them that option, do we? Personal empowerment begins when we recognise that we’ve had enough, and begin to take control of what happens and when it happens in our life. If we feel guilty about taking a break, we need to change our thinking! The Psalmist writes, ‘He makes me to lie down in green pastures…He restores my soul…’ (Psalm 23:2-3 NKJV) Spiritual, physical and emotional restoration begins with rest. So let’s learn to take ‘time out’ without feeling lazy, irresponsible or unproductive.
