‘...They all began making excuses...’ Luke 14:18 NLT

We have every excuse in the book! In Luke 14 Jesus talked about three men who were invited to a wedding. In Bible times the first invitation was generally issued months in advance, and a reminder sent later. Weddings were expensive so being invited was a great honour and declining was considered an insult. Like all of us, these guys were busy. But the fact is, they’d already accepted the invitation. Then at the last minute one said, ‘…I have just bought a field and must inspect it.’ (Luke 14:18 NLT) Back then buying property was complex and time-consuming, and a buyer would typically have ample opportunity to examine it before closing. This man let possessions hold him back. The next one said, ‘…I have…bought five pairs of oxen, and…want to try them out.’ (Luke 14:19 NLT) This guy made a living ploughing, and buying oxen without trying them out was like us buying a car without test-driving it. He let his career hold him back. The third man said, ‘I now have a wife, so I can’t come.’ (Luke 14: 20 NLT); in other words, ‘I’m married and settled…end of story!’ This man’s personal relationships held him back. Jesus was talking to the Pharisees here, and in essence He said, ‘You guys had a personal invitation from God and you blew it!’ This isn’t an indictment of career, possessions and relationships; it’s about making sure the good doesn’t blind you to the best. Bottom line: ‘They all began making excuses,’ and things and affections figured in just about every one of them. It’s why God says, ‘Set your affection on things above, not on…earth.’ (Colossians 3:2 KJV)
