When God asked Adam, ‘…Have you eaten…the fruit I commanded you not to eat?’, he replied, ‘…It was the woman You gave me…’ (Genesis 3:11-12 NLT) Adam passed the buck, and we do the same. Marybeth Whalen writes: ‘Running was something I told myself I couldn’t do. I’d a whole list of reasons. If only I’d a good pair of running shoes. If only I could run without kids in tow. If only I’d an MP3 player to listen to music…All these “reasons” were just thinly disguised excuses…I didn’t want to extend myself outside my comfort zone…or strain every muscle in my body…or take time out of my busy days. I liked to talk about running, but I didn’t actually want to do it. Maybe your excuses involve…why you can’t give up a bad habit, why you aren’t able to forgive someone, or why you’re continuing in sin. God’s convicting you…but you’re letting excuses serve as a barrier…choose one today and begin to tear it down. Take one brick out of the wall. Over [time] choose more bricks until…nothing is standing between you and that scary thing you know you need to do…I learned that we’re all born to run as long as we grip the Father’s hand and stop letting excuses keep us from taking that first step.’ Is the situation you’re in somebody else’s responsibility, or yours? Until you answer that question truthfully, you won’t make any progress. Paul says, ‘Through everything God made, [we] can clearly see …His…power and divine nature. So [we] have no excuse.’ (Romans 1:20 NLT) Get honest. Tell God, ‘I’m the problem. Fix me.’
