You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Acts 1:8
Will shares his reflections on this verse…
The disciples had been devastated by Jesus’ death. All they had hoped for, dreamed of, and expected was gone as Jesus was arrested and crucified. Instead of answering their questions about the kingdom, he is promising them power and that they will be his witnesses. Did they even understand what he was saying to them, what He was promising? The day of Pentecost came soon after. What a difference that day made as the disciples and those gathered with them were filled with the Holy Spirit and came out of hiding and preached to those in Jerusalem for the festival.
That same Spirit that was given to the disciples is given to us to strengthen, encourage and empower us. Jesus didn’t leave us alone but fills us with the same Spirit that filled Him that we may be his witnesses to the ends of the earth but more than that so that we might do the things that he did and even greater things. (John 14:12)
