Finding Courage In David’s Battle with Goliath

by | Apr 21, 2025

The Israelite soldiers were afraid to face Goliath. But while everyone else was afraid, David stood out because of his unique spirit.

On this episode of Faith Boost, Pastor Andrew McLennan shares an inspiring message from the Bible about David and Goliath. During David’s time, the Israelite soldiers were afraid to face Goliath, a giant much bigger than them. But while everyone else was afraid, David stood out because of his unique spirit.

David’s confidence didn’t come from being strong or trained in battle. It came from his close relationship with God. David spent a lot of time praying and worshipping in the wilderness, which made him different from others. These moments with God helped him feel powerful and ready to take on challenges.

“The reason that he’s even willing to go there,” says Andrew, “that he’s willing to fight, is because David had a different spirit. The whole culture of his day, the whole society he lived in, and the people he was a part of, had given up. They weren’t willing to fight, and they were letting Goliath dominate.”

A Unique Spirit

Even though the Israelite soldiers were strong and trained to fight with swords and spears, they were too scared to face Goliath. Not even the king’s rewards of wealth, no taxes, and a chance to marry the king’s daughter were enough to convince anyone to fight him. But David was different. He was driven by his faith in God. When David saw Goliath, he didn’t just see how big the giant was.

David remembered that God was with him, and that made all the difference. He was separate from his generation,” says Andrew. “He was separate from his world. He was separate from the culture of his day. He was in it, but he wasn’t of it, and he had a different spirit.”

David’s fight with Goliath teaches us that a genuine connection with God can help us overcome any obstacle. Faith is more important than physical strength when it comes to achieving victory. Andrew encourages us to think about what it means to have a “different spirit,” one that views our challenges through the power of God.

“We’ve got to get out there and mix with people and love and bless them,” says Andrew. “That’s our call.”
