Guarding Your Heart – Ps Andrew McLennan

by | Apr 14, 2025

In 1 Samuel 16:6-7, God tells Samuel not to judge by appearance but to look at a person’s heart instead. A heart that stays close to God.

On this episode of Faith Boost, Pastor Andrew McLennan talks about King David and shares some of the key reasons for his success. In 1 Samuel 16:6-7, God tells Samuel not to judge by appearance but to look at a person’s heart instead.

David was the youngest of eight brothers, but God chose him instead of his older brothers. Andrew believes this shows us why it’s important to have a heart like David’s. A heart that stays close to God. Proverbs 4:23 reminds us to take care of our hearts because they guide everything we do.

“I think more than ever before,” says Andrew, “we have to guard our hearts. There’s so much information bombarding us on our social media platforms and digital devices. There’s so much coming in that can pollute our hearts.”

Look at a Person’s Heart

Although these distractions we face might not seem like idols, people still spend a lot of time and energy on things that draw them away from God. David had a heart that completely followed God and turned away from false idols and distractions.

“We can go after God with all of our heart too,” says Andrew. “And this is the great secret of Christianity. It’s the great secret of David’s life. It’s also the great secret of the Bible. Who are the men and women that God uses? They are the men and women who go after God with their whole heart.”

James 4:7-8 encourages us to submit to God, resist evil, and come close to Him, promising that God will come close to us too. “I think the first place for spiritual warfare is your own heart,” says Andrew. “The first place to resist the devil is your own emotions, your own mind and your own habits.”

A Heart that Seeks God

Andrew encourages us all to develop a heart that seeks after God, like David did. “Be someone that guards your heart and resists the devil from your life,” says Andrew. “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.”
