On this episode of Rise & Shine, Joel A’Bell from Convoy of Hope joined us to share how the organisation is helping communities affected by natural disasters and other challenges. Joel shared updates on the situation in Southeast Queensland as Cyclone Alfred approaches. “We’re just trying to get people ready,” he said, “trying to clear gutters in homes, and make sure everything’s safe and tied down.”
Joel says that getting ready before a cyclone can help people feel calmer and stay safer during and after the storm. He explained that the best-prepared people bring their outdoor furniture inside, secure loose items in garages, and tie down anything that strong winds could blow away. Being prepared not only protects homes but also allows people to help their neighbours and others once the storm has passed.
“People who have prepared their homes and their lives before a cyclone,” said Joel, “are definitely more calm and measured.”
Convoy of Hope are also sending help to people affected by Cyclone Alfred. Joel shared that a truck full of essential supplies has left Sydney, carrying hygiene kits, towels, buckets, masks, and more. The truck is expected to arrive in time to ensure people have what they need before the worst of the storm.
Trying to Get People Ready
Joel stressed the importance of following advice from disaster response organisations and staying updated with community alerts. He encouraged people to work together with recovery groups to ensure everyone gets the support they need during challenging times. “It’s going to get crazy for the next couple of days.”
Joel shared a message of hope from Romans; I pray that the God who is the source of all hope will fill you with joy and peace because you trust in Him. He encouraged everyone to take a moment to reflect on God’s goodness and trust Him, even in uncertain times.
“God we trust You,” said Joel. “We don’t know what’s going to happen, but You do.” Joel also emphasised the importance of slowing down to listen to God’s guidance, as it could lead to actions that “save our lives.”
