A Montana couple alleges they lost custody of their 14-year-old daughter to the state’s Child and Family Services agency because they opposed her desire to undergo gender transition.
After pretending to have swallowed painkillers and toilet cleaner and being taken to hospital last August, the teenager told doctors she identified as a boy. Her Christian father and stepmother Todd and Krista Kolstad opposed any social or medical transition. They tried to explain that their daughter had a history of mental health issues. She had already faced bullying at a previous school and exhibited attention-seeking behavior.
A court determined that transitioning “was in the child’s therapeutic interest” and her parents were “not following recommended therapy.” The state then took custody of the girl who was briefly relocated to a residential treatment facility in Wyoming which reportedly specialised in gender therapy. She was returned to Montana where she continued to be treated as a boy under state supervision.
She has reportedly been sent to live with her birth mother 2,600 kilometres away in Ontario, Canada. The Kolstads claim the biological mother has had little contact with her daughter over the past seven years.
Todd Kolstad observes state authorities “have had since August until now to completely brainwash and transition our child. She’s not the same now.” The couple claims they have been effectively locked out of decisions on their daughter’s future. It’s unclear what medical transition procedures have taken place, if any. The parents despair that they have been left powerless to intervene and now face arrest for going public with their predicament.
Krista Kolstad told DailyMail.com: ‘It’s been horrible. Our family unit will never be the same. Even if they returned our daughter to us now, you’re not going to have the same family unit. It’s created a lot of animosity. I love my daughter unconditionally, and only want her to refrain from making decisions until she has the maturity and life experiences to understand what the consequences are for her actions.”
“We will continue to fight. We will never give up on our daughter and for what we believe is morally right. We will continue to tell our story, even though we are currently in contempt of court, and try to keep other families from going through this. Our greatest fear is that our daughter is now going to become a victim of this system.”
