On this episode of Faith Boost, Pastor Andrew McLennan shares a message about facing fear and trusting in God. The phrase fear not appears frequently in the Bible, and Andrew believes that God wants us to avoid living in fear, even though it’s a normal feeling we all experience. Our sinful nature wants us to be afraid, but God did not make us to live in fear.
Andrew talks about the story of David and Goliath, and how when Goliath challenged the Israelites, the entire nation was paralysed by fear. “If we focus too much on the negative,” says Andrew, “it can fuel our fears. I think a real key to not living in fear is not to focus on the bad. Try and find the good.”
Everyone was too scared to fight until David stepped forward. Instead of letting Goliath’s threats scare him, David focussed on what he believed God wanted him to do. By having faith and trusting in God, he confronted Goliath. It was a lesson in how God’s power can help us overcome our fears.
Facing Fear and Trusting God
“Don’t look at your circumstances,” says Andrew. “Don’t look at your situation. Don’t look at all the mess that’s going on around you or the thing that’s making you afraid. Focus on the Lord.”
Andrew shared a personal story about a time when his house flooded. There was about five feet of water inside, and he lost everything. It was a really hard time, and he felt overwhelmed. But in the middle of it all, he sensed God saying, I’m with you. Those simple words gave him comfort and reminded him that God was still there.
“The Lord says, fear not, for I am with you,” says Andrew. “And when He is with us, when we meditate upon that, when we’re aware of His presence, it’s reason enough for us to walk out of our fears. To overcome our fears and actually walk in faith.”
