On this episode of Faith Boost, Pastor Andrew McLennan talks about the power of worship in our everyday lives, finding wisdom in the story of David in 1 Samuel 19. “Did you know that real men worship and real women worship?” Andrew says. “In a time of trouble, having a worshipping heart can lift you into a good place with God.”
Andrew points to the moment when Saul was tormented by a distressing spirit and found peace only when David began to play music. “Saul’s oppressed, depressed, he’s angry, he’s mad, he can’t sleep. Life’s not good. So what does he do? David plays music. David worships. And Saul finds peace, comfort, and rest for his soul.”
Andrew reminds us that David wasn’t just a musician. He was a warrior, a giant slayer, a leader of men. And yet he was also a worshipper. “David was a man’s man. He killed lions and bears. He faced down Goliath. But he was also a poet, a worshipper. The classic poet warrior.”
The Power of Worship
Andrew disagrees with the common belief among some Christians that you can stay close to God without being part of a church. “This is why I can’t understand Christians who say, ‘I don’t go to church. I don’t need church.’ Really? I need church. You need it to worship toegether.”
Heaven isn’t portrayed as a place of isolated personal worship but of unified, collective praise. “The Bible says heaven has incredible worship with the saints, the elders, the angels, even the beasts. Everyone together crying out, Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty.”
Andrew believes church is a little taste of heaven on earth.
Learn to Worship in Everyday Life
Worship isn’t just for Sunday mornings. Andrew offers practical ways to build a lifestyle of worship that carries us through the week. “You might have a tough day on Tuesday or Thursday. Learning to worship God can help your heart be lifted. It can help you find peace, comfort, and the presence of God.”
Andrew starts each day with worship music in his headphones while out walking. “It lifts my heart and I start to pray. I pray in English. I pray in the Spirit. But the worship is playing in my ears and it just takes me there.” He even plays worship music in the shower.
“I know it sounds cheesy, but in the bathroom where the shower is, I play worship music. Just worship, worship, worship.” Whatever music platform we choose, Andrew encourages us to worship Monday through Saturday, not just on Sunday.
“Worship was a real key to David’s life. And it can be a key to your life and my life as well.”
