On this episode of Faith Boost, Pastor Andrew McLennan talks about self-worth from a Biblical perspective. He emphasises that our value doesn’t come from how we look on the outside. It comes from who we are on the inside, and our relationship with God.
Pastor Andrew begins by sharing the story of King David, sharing a verse from 1 Samuel 16:7. In this verse, God tells the Prophet Samuel not to judge people by how they look. For man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.
This is especially relevant today, where many people spend large amounts of money to enhance their looks. “I don’t think God’s against us looking our best and using what we’ve got,” says Andrew. “But deep down inside, we have to reach a point where we understand our value is not based on how we look.”
Our value doesn’t come from how we look
Physical beauty is temporary; our bodies will not stay at their best forever. True and lasting value comes from our character, choices, and the condition of our hearts. “All of us have the opportunity to make our hearts right with God,” says Andrew. “And beyond that, we have the opportunity as Christians to understand that God values us for who we are on the inside.”
God measures our worth by our hearts and the choices we make. When we respond to God, trust in Him, and try to live by His teachings, we increase our value in His eyes. Salvation is available to everyone, no matter how they look; what truly matters is the state of our heart and our relationship with God.
“We’ve got to die to that sense of value and identity and simply what we look like,” says Andrew. “We have to let our Lord Jesus live inside our hearts and realise that our value is in our relationship with God. The fact that Jesus lives in our hearts, that’s who we are.”
