About

Author: Lauren Farrow

In today’s fast-paced world, many families rely on outside systems—schools, daycares, and extracurriculars—to shape their child’s day. But something is shifting. More parents are turning to homeschooling, not just as an alternative to traditional education, but as a way to reclaim their role as the primary influence in their children’s lives.

As someone who has spent years in the field of education around diverse communities and religious beliefs, first as a public school classroom teacher and now as a faith-based homeschool consultant, I’ve seen firsthand how transformative it is when faith and learning go hand in hand.

That’s why I’ve written a series focussed on providing Christian families an ultimate homeschool guide so that I can support you on your journey with faith-based homeschooling for your family. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to strengthen your faith-based approach, this series will provide you with the tools, resources, and encouragement to confidently lead your child’s education with Christ at the centre.

I hope it empowers parents to be the primary influence in their children’s education, instilling biblical values, character, and a love for learning in a way that traditional schools simply can’t match.

One of the many beautiful things about homeschooling is it allows families the freedom to weave faith into everyday learning. It also allows parents to tailor education to their child’s unique strengths and needs, making learning more meaningful and effective.

Beyond academics, homeschooling creates space for intentional character development, shaping children with biblical values while also offering the flexibility to prioritise church, service, and family time without the constraints of a traditional school schedule.

How to Get Started Homeschooling as a Christian Parent

Homeschooling can feel like a big step, but at its core, it’s simply an extension of the love and guidance you’re already giving your children every day. When parents lead a Christ-centered life, imparting Godly wisdom to their children naturally becomes a top priority.

It reminds me of Psalm 78:5-7: He established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers to teach to their children, that the next generation might know them, the children yet unborn, and arise and tell them to their children, so that they should set their hope in God and not forget the works of God, but keep His commandments.

As parents, it is wholly our responsibility to adequately prepare our children for the world with His divine wisdom and commandments. Here are a few things to consider when wanting to start homeschooling as a Christian parent:

Choosing a Christian Homeschooling Method

To set your family up for success right from the start, it is imperative that you choose a homeschool approach that works best for you and your students. Really any multidisciplinary approach is an effective way to bring faith and academics together in a way that feels meaningful and engaging for the whole family.

Here are a few popular christian homeschooling methods: Classical, Charlotte Mason, Unit Studies

Understanding Homeschooling Laws & Requirements

Next you’ll want to make sure you align with schooling requirements and homeschooling laws. This will vary depending on which state or country you reside in, so again it is important to do your own research to ensure your approach is compliant while keeping faith at the centre.

If you are new and just starting out on your homeschooled journey, remember that the beginning is always the most challenging part of the process. You will have to research, learn, and reiterate systems to make sure you are set up for success.

But I promise you it will all be worth it!

If you’re feeling a little overwhelmed about where to start, you’re not alone! Sometimes, all it takes is a little guidance to give you the confidence to move forward. That’s why I offer free discovery calls through Teacher to Techie—so we can chat, go over your questions, and create a plan that fits your family’s unique needs.

With my background as a former elementary teacher and faith-based homeschool consultant, I’ve helped many families find a path that feels both doable and deeply rewarding. Let’s make this journey one you feel excited about!

Here are some key areas to be aware of:

Notification & Registration Requirements

Depending on where you live, you may need to notify local authorities of your intent to homeschool, while in some areas, there’s little to no reporting required.
Curriculum & Instructional Requirements
In many regions, you have the freedom to choose your child’s curriculum, but some places may require specific subjects like math, science, and language arts, while still allowing for faith-based learning.
Assessment & Record-Keeping
Some countries or states might require standardised testing or progress reports to monitor learning, while others may leave this up to you with no formal assessment needed.
Parent Qualifications
A few areas may ask homeschooling parents to have at least a high school diploma or equivalent, but in most places, there are no specific educational requirements for parents to homeschool.
Religious Exemptions & Legal Protections
Certain regions offer protections that allow parents to homeschool based on religious beliefs, ensuring you can teach your children from a biblical perspective without legal interference.
Next Steps for Christian Parents to Start Homeschooling
Now that you are equipped with some baseline knowledge about homeschooling and want to continue moving forward on your journey, let’s discuss how to take those first steps with confidence:
Pray & Define Your Family’s Goals
Begin with prayer. Ask God to guide your decision and clarify your “why.” Do you want more faith-centred learning? A flexible education tailored to your child’s needs? Defining your purpose will shape your homeschooling experience.
Research Homeschooling Methods
Not all homeschooling looks the same! Explore approaches like Charlotte Mason (literature-rich, nature-focused), Classical (structured, logic-driven), or Unit Studies (hands-on, thematic learning). Choose what aligns with your child’s needs and your family’s values.

In part two of this series, we are going to do a deep dive into the best Christian homeschool curriculum and how to integrate a biblical worldview within academic pedagogy.

Find a Support Community

Lastly, remember that you don’t have to do this alone! Join local co-ops, church homeschool groups, reach out to Teacher To Techie to find encouragement, resources, and fellowship.

Take it one step at a time—your homeschool journey is a calling, and God is walking it with you.

Final Encouragement

What do I feel is the most important thing that Christian families need to hear? Just start. Don’t feel like you have to put so much pressure on yourself to be a perfectionist or to be the best teacher in order to give your child a rich, Christ-centred education.

Trust that you’ll learn and adjust as you go. Your homeschool won’t look like anyone else’s, and that’s the beauty of it. God has called you to this journey, and He will equip you every step of the way.

This was just Part 1 of our homeschooling series! In the next post, we’ll dive into Finding the Best Christian Homeschool Curriculum & Teaching with a Biblical Worldview. This is where I’ll tap into my experience as a former teacher to share best practices, effective strategies, expert insights, and all the tips and tricks I’ve learned as an educator along the years. Plus, we’ll talk about setting routines and expectations to make your homeschool days smooth and meaningful.
