The Word for Today

‘A woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume…She broke the jar and poured the perfume on His head. Some of those present were saying indignantly to one another, "Why this waste of perfume? It could have been sold…and the money given to the poor." And they rebuked her harshly. "Leave her alone," said Jesus… "She has done a beautiful thing…The poor you will always have with you… But you will not always have Me. She did what she could. She poured perfume on My body beforehand to prepare for My burial. I tell you… wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her."’ (Mark 14:3-9 NIV)
She could’ve given the money to the poor. It would’ve been a ‘Christian’ thing to do, wouldn’t it? I mean, a jar of perfume ‘wasted’ on a man. What did Jesus want to smell like an aromatherapy shop for, anyway? The party-poopers so miss the point in this. The woman gives the best she has to offer for Jesus. This is real sacrificial worship; giving your best to Jesus. What about you? What’s your best? What can you sacrificially give to worship Jesus? The woman gave what she could, when she could. What love have you got to pour out of your jar today?
