Whether it’s an overweight, out-of-touch grandad with a beard to rival Father Christmas’ or a super-tolerant hippy waving peace signs with his fingers from the sky, chances are your picture of God is wrong.
The Bible isn’t one of those kiss-‘n-tell biographies where the middle of the book is peppered with glossy pics of God. No, better than that, it draws for us outlines of who God is. Genesis tells us God is an artist. He draws up a vast universe from His imagination. Exodus shows us God the deliverer. A people crushed by slavery are brought to freedom by following God. The point is: if you want a portrait of God, the brushstrokes are found throughout the Bible. Jesus is the perfect snapshot of God, He even says so Himself: ‘Anyone who has seen Me has seen the Father.’ (John 14:9 NIV) So what? God wears sandals and could do with a haircut, is that the point? Not exactly: Jesus was making the face of God known through what He did. He loved. So God has a face of love. He healed. So God has hands of healing. He died for us to show God’s all-out, nothing-held-back-from-us love.
