Heart of Worship

Text size: A- A+

‘True worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshippers.’ John 4:23 NASB

It’s easier to throw your arms up and abandon your heart to God if the guitar player is in tune and the singer’s voice is smooth as cream, right? Actually, worshipping God doesn’t have to involve music at all. So when we catch ourselves thinking ‘this song doesn’t really do it for me’ or ‘I’m not really feeling it today’ or ‘I’m not getting anything out of worship,’ we need an urgent rethink.

Paul reminds us what real worship sounds like: ‘Offer your lives as a living sacrifice… Your offering must be only for God and pleasing to Him, which is the spiritual way for you to worship.’ (Romans 12:1 NCV)

When you fall in love with someone, you probably don’t treat life like a musical, breaking out into song about your beloved every two minutes. You love someone by spending quality time together, by taking an interest, by sharing secrets, desires, ups and downs. Falling in love with God is the same; with the added extra of being assured that God will never do the dirty on you. Worshipping is about giving your heart over to God.

So if a certain song helps lead you into the presence of God, great. But don’t leave your heart strapped to a guitar fret board; work the song into your life. Make your own sweet music through your everyday, ordinary life. Make worship a lifestyle; not a track on Spotify.
